Outreach and Training

Opioid Overdose Prevention (Naloxone/Narcan)
In 2021, over 5,800 people died in NYS due to overdosing on opioids. This number has rapidly been increasing, and this training seeks to reduce that number. In this course, we will discuss what an opioid overdose is, how to administer the reversal agent naloxone (also known as Narcan), and how to treat an overdose victim after the medication is given. All participants will be eligible to take home their own naloxone kit upon completion of the training.

Hands-Only CPR
Every year, 350,000 people die from cardiac arrest in the United States. Immediate CPR can double or triple chances of survival after cardiac arrest. This course will teach the American Heart Association’s (AHA) proven methods to help increase positive outcomes.

Stop the Bleed
Did you know that someone who is severely bleeding can bleed to death in as little as 5 minutes? This course will go over bleeding control, keeping blood inside the body, to help prevent those deaths. No prior training is needed and a variety of methods will be taught. Participants will receive a certificate after completion.

Basic First Aid
There were over 52 million injuries at home in 2023 (National Safety Council). This course will go over how to treat basic injuries and what to do in case of an emergency. Medical, traumatic, and environmental emergencies will be discussed. The course will also review basic safety information to help prevent illness and injury so you or a loved one does not become part of the statistics.

Choking
According to the NSC, choking is the 4th leading cause of death for unintentional injuries (2023). Choking is usually caused by food and much more common among older adults. This course will elaborate on what choking is and how it can be properly prevented. Rescue techniques such as the Heimlich Maneuver will be discussed.
