Niagara County Warns of Pretrial Services Scam

Families of those who have run afoul of the law and may be incarcerated waiting trial should be aware of a scam that is attempting to get them to pay for pretrial services, according to the Niagara County Probation Department. This scam has been attempted in Niagara County, as well as surrounding counties.
Probation Director Deborah LaRock said the family of a recently incarcerated individual was contacted by a person identifying themselves as a representative from Pretrial Services, insisting that they pay for pretrial services for their family member. Pretrial services include supervision and monitoring, court appearance reminders, risk assessments, referrals to services and compliance monitoring.
“The Niagara County Probation Department manages pretrial services for the county and, by law in New York State, there is no charge,” said LaRock. “This is an attempt to scam families of those in legal trouble, knowing they may be unfamiliar with the legal system and feel overwhelmed.”
The scammers appear legitimate and have information related to the incarcerated individuals. They may also send a very official looking Pretrial Services flyer. If people have any questions about pretrial services being offered to them, they can contact Niagara County Pretrial Services direct at 716-438-3381.
