Niagara County Clerk Warns Residents without REAL ID of Airport Fee
Niagara County Joseph A. Jastrzemski today warned those who are flying domestically but still do not have a REAL ID-compliant license or other acceptable
documents that the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will begin charging them a $45 fee starting Feb. 1. The fee is to use the TSA Confirmi.ID process which uses advanced biometrics and biographic data for identification verification.
“Well over 60 percent of driver’s licenses issued to Niagara County residents are REAL ID compliant, making us one of the top counties in the state,” said Jastrzemski. “Other people rely on a passport, a Nexus card and other DHS trusted traveler cards like Global Entry, SENTRI, and FAST to meet REAL ID requirements. But if you do not have any of these, you will now be faced with this new fee from the TSA every time you fly, starting in February, to cover the cost of the verification process.”
Jastrzemski reminded residents that New York State offers both a REAL ID license and Enhanced Driver’s license to meet the federal requirements. The difference is the Enhanced can be used for travel to Canada, Mexico and some Caribbean countries. Residents can visit www.dmv.ny.gov to learn about the different options and the documentation you must bring to the DMV to be issued one.
Jastrzemski said he has often urged people to consider a passport as their best option, but warned people to be cautious of third-party vendors that try to get you to pay for their services to get a passport.
“A passport can be a good option since it will cover domestic flights, trips to Canada and any other international travel. While it costs a little more than the New York State Real ID and Enhanced licenses, it is good for 10 years and will meet every one of your travel needs,” said Jastrzemski. “If you choose this route, be cautious of third parties who say they can help you get passport and then charge big fees for information that is already free to the public. Instead, just reach out to the County Clerk’s Office and we can help you.”
